Tenerife’s own Jadel (Javier Luis Delgado) is one of the most well-known Canarian artists, a brilliant singer and superb performer who started out in a Take That tribute act in Benidorm before his group became known internationally, and then went on to win Antena 3’s talent show El Número Uno in 2012. He has starred as Jesus Christ Superstar, and played Che Guevara in Evita, performing to sell-out audiences not only in the Santa Cruz auditorium, but around the whole of Spain as the musical toured the country. Just a reminder that this Thursday, 2 February, is a Tenerife-wide public holiday in honour of the Virgen de la Candelaria. Many shops and businesses will be closed, as La Morenita (the Black Madonna) is the Canary Islands’ patron saint, and she has particular meaning for Tenerife because her apparition is said to have taken place in 1392 in Candelaria, where her basilica is now located (see more HERE). Photos: Loro Parque. Loro Parque has extended its penguin colony with four newborn southern rock hopper penguins. The new additions are said to be in good health and coming on well in the penguin baby station.  These young marine birds were hatched in December and remained in the incubator for a while. They are currently being fed a specialist diet based on fish porridge with calcium supplement. They will stay in the baby station for a couple of months before starting to integrate with the rest of the penguins at Loro Parque. Updated 26 January 2017: And finally it is over. Former mayor José Alberto González Reverón has been found guilty of continuous official misconduct, and sentenced to 17 years disqualification from holding public office and fined €6,500. Eleven other councillors, technicians and a businessman involved in “operations”, some of whom have been found guilty of bribery in addition to official misconduct, have been similarly disqualified from public office, fined up to €700,000, and some have received prison sentences of up to six years. First prize will be €300, second prize €200, and third prize €150. Arona Ayuntamiento has issued a reminder that today and tomorrow there will be another Canarias Folk Fest in the Plaza de La Pescadora on the harbour promenade in Los Cristianos. Traditional and typical Canarian cultural and gastronomic offerings will all be on display, with a market, music, dancing, arts and crafts, etc. Everything starts from around 4pm, and as the poster shows, there will be further Canarias Folk Fests in Los Cristianos over the next couple of months as well.READ MORE
