The latest statistics from Spain’s Tourism Studies Institute Frontur announced by the Ministerio de Industria show that the Canaries enjoyed the best May since 1995, when records began being collated in their current form. The numbers show the largest ever number of foreign tourists arriving in the islands, with 810,243 visitors, up 4.3% on May last year, and so Canarian tourism has returned to historic maxima after a slight reduction in figures for March (-1.6%) and April (-5.5%).

The figures show that in the first five months of 2015, the Canaries have welcomed 4,859,434 foreign tourists, an increase of 0.1% on the same period in 2014, a year which was itself the best in the sector’s history. Frontur says that the Canaries benefited especially from a greater number of German and Scandinavian tourists, markets which had been fallen for eight consecutive months, with French and Dutch tourists leading the field.
