A widower has contacted me to say that he is now visiting Tenerife alone after many years visiting as a couple with his late wife. He says that “between November and April we spent most of our time strolling between La Caleta and Los Cristianos or hiring a car and going `inland` or visiting other areas of the island”. After giving Tenerife a break after his wife died, he says he is now a “lone traveller”, but misses group company. He ends by asking “could you suggest any social groups in the area who welcome short term retired, active winter visitors?”

This reader explicitly said that his enquiry could be used “as the basis for any discussion forum or article” so I’m posting to ask for suggestions on his behalf, as well as for anyone else who might find themselves in a similar position. If you know of anything, please could you add it as a comment in the box below? It would be much appreciated!

  1. We moved to Tenerife 12 months ago and came across a group called Friends of Tenerife, who have made us very welcome and helped us meet all sorts of other people. FOT meet once a month, usually for lunch and also there are other activities from time to time. The lunches are always excellent value, and include a couple of euros donation to the registered charity fund they operate, raising money for local good causes. Whilst it is based in the north, mainly around Puerto de la Cruz, and so may not help this gentleman, I can certainly recommend it to anyone in or around here. Website: http://www.friendsoftenerife.com and Facebook page too.

  3. There is a group called the Swallows that meet in Los Cristianos. I think they meet at El Tejar near the bus staion about 11.00am every Monday to discuss the activities for the week. Just go along and introduce yourself, they are very friendly people.

  4. Tenerife Swallows – they meet every Monday 11 a.m. at Tejays Bar outside the Apollo Centre. Make yourself known to Carole Hart, who organises get-togethers, quiz and party nights, art groups, dancing, bowls, Petanque. The group raised 11000.00 euros for cancer bus and research. http://www.swallows-tenerife.eu

  5. San Blas Cultural Centre in Golf del Sur provides yoga; meditation; line dancing; zumba gold; art; spanish classes; tango.

  6. Many thanks for the posting Janet, and thank you to those who have already replied. I could be kept occupied when I arrive on 25th November! On this occasion I shall be spending most of my time in the south of the island. However the north, and in particular, Puerto de la Cruz has special memories for me. It was the first Tenerife holiday my wife and I took in 1974 and I usually make at least one trip there each visit so perhaps I might still meet `Friends of Tenerife`.
On a more general note, during my visits over the past few months, I have had my eyes opened by the number of people in a similar situation to myself. Hopefully they might come across Janet`s site and benefit from reading this post.
