Update 8.30pm: And this evening emergency services are reporting the rescue of a third bather today with symptoms of hypothermia at playa de Rojas, El Sauzal. The man is alive and well and is being treated at a local health centre.

Update 1pm: A second drowning today has been more tragic, with the death of a bather on the Bajamar coast in north Tenerife. Like the Torviscas incident, he was spotted in the sea by lifeguards, but on this occasion nothing could be done for him. His body was recovered by helicopter.

Original post 3 September: Emergency services say that lifeguards saved a man who drowned shortly before half past ten this morning at Playa Torviscas. The man, said to be a foreigner, was resuscitated after the lifeguards pulled him from the sea where he is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest, a common symptom of cold water shock. After paramedics arrived and he was stabilized at the scene, he was transferred to Hospiten Sur where he is said to be in critical condition.
