Over the next few weeks drivers in the Santa Cruz area will almost certainly pass a series of Guardia Civil alcohol checkpoints which are being set up on all main roads in and out of the capital. It’s because of the Santa Cruz Carnaval, of course, but anyone driving to and from Santa Cruz is just as likely to be stopped and breath-tested. The measures, under  the control of thirty Tráfico officers, will be operating around the clock in an attempt to persuade carnival-goers into using public transport for the major events, and to keep the roads safe while the city is in party mode.
