Tenerife is the preferred winter destination for Thomas Cook and First Choice customers according to a study carried out by the two tour operators. Tenerife came out on top of  a list of favoured wintering places, ahead of Sharm el Sheik, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, and Mexico in fifth place.

Tenerife Cabildo economy vice President and tourism councillor, Carlos Alonso, said that the results were very good news and derived from Tenerife’s character as destination leader, and consolidated the island as a valued holiday choice not just for British tourists, but for European ones at large since the two companies operate throughout Europe as well as in the UK.

Sr Alonso said that it shouldn’t come as a surprise thanks to Tenerife’s quality tourism offer which went far beyond just sun and beach. In 2011, British holidaymakers comprised the largest market with 1,650,000 tourists, followed by the Spanish themselves with 1,300,000, and then the Germans with 590,000. Hopefully this winter’s figures will be boosted by this study and help 2012′s results too.
