Three British residents in Spain included in Queen’s New Year Honours List

The FCO has confirmed that three British residents, all in the Alicante province of the Valencian Community, have been honoured with an MBE by the Queen in the New Year Honours List 2019. The Member of the British Empire order, awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community, has gone to Ricky Garland, Volunteer of HELP Vega Baja; Elaine Mary Horton, President of HELP Jalon Valley; and Candida Jane Wright, President of HELP Denia and Marina Alta, who also received a Points of Light award two years ago.

The British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, said he was “delighted that the commitment and compassion of Ricky Garland, Elaine Mary Horton and Candida Wright have been recognised by Her Majesty The Queen in this way, after so many years of service to British nationals in Spain.” The full New Year 2019 Diplomatic Service and Overseas List of Honours can be viewed HERE, and there is more information about the various types of honours and awards HERE.

  1. Dear Janet
Thank you for mentioning us. It has been a very emotional time these past few days. Once the British Ambassador advised me that I was to receive an award I had to keep it secret for 3 weeks! On the 28th of December at night the listing was released and I told close family the next day but I was in a Variety Benefit Show on the 29th with my Drama Group and so I didn’t say anything. However at the end of the show I knew Elaine Horton was in the audience and so I asked everyone to congratulate her and she then told them I had an MBE too so the Cat was out of the Bag so to speak. What a blast and on top of that we raised 2000 euros for a couple going through a hard time. So all in all a lovely end to an emotional day. Sorry for waffling. Thank you again. I especially want to say that there is great team of people in HELP and they do incredible things. We are all volunteers so my award is for them too. Happy New Year. Best wishes, Candy Wright x

  2. Nothing less than you deserve, Candy ?

  3. Congratulations to both you, Candy and to you, Elaine! You both have done and still do so much for us all here in the Northern Costa Blanca – I don’t know what we would do without you! At times of illness and distress, especially in a ‘foreign’ country, sometimes everything seems overwhelming and impossible – but you and all your helpers ease the path and help us all in our hour of need! Thank you for everything you have done, and so glad to see you rewarded in this way!
