Sanidad has announced that the 2010/11 winter flu vaccination campaign will start next Monday, 4 October. Although the campaign will run until 31 December, stocks are going to be limited, so the sooner those at risk see their doctors the better. The Government is investing near to two million Euros in the programme, and it is somewhat innovative in that it is a single dose vaccine which can also be given to pregnant women and the morbidly obese.
Sanidad reminded the public that the flu is highly contagious and has a high incidence in the Canaries. Each year, between 5 and 15% of the population are affected. Those who want to receive the vaccine should ring 012 to ask for an appointment. The groups at risk who are particularly advised to do so include those who have chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular illnesses, or liver, kidney, haematological or metabolic complaints, as well as those over 65, the pregnant or morbidly obese.
