2018 public holidays and local fiestas

2018 public holidays and local fiestas

This is the calendar of public holidays for 2018, as approved by the Canarian government.

1 January – New Year’s Day
6 January – Epifanía del Señor/Epiphany
2 February – Tenerife’s “island day” for patron saint Virgen de la Candelaria
30 March – Viernes Santo/Good Friday
1 May – Fiesta del Trabajo/Workers’ Day
30 May – Día de Canarias/Canarian Day
15 August – Asunción de la Virgen/Assumption
12 October – Fiesta Nacional de España/Spain Day
1 November – Todos los Santos/All Saints Day
6 December – Día de la Constitución Española/Spanish Constitution Day
8 December – Inmaculada Concepción/Immaculate Conception
25 December – Natividad del Señor/Christmas Day

In addition to the above 12 public holidays (11 regional/national plus 1 island day), each municipality has its own two days bringing the total number of holidays in any given area to 14. It is the proliferation of these two local days throughout the island that gives the impression that it’s the whole of Tenerife that is constantly on holiday. 7. Hi Janet, I am hoping to visit Candelaria for the first time, and have found a schedule to their celebrations here

Do you have any experience of this particular festival? On the night of the 1st Feb, my understanding is that they turn all the lights out and light candles and on the 2nd Feb (trying to translate from Spanish) they seem to have the usual kind of traditional festival procession… which would you say was the best to see? I am leaning towards the evening of the 1st for something different!

Yes, it’s Candlemas, so the candles are fundamental. On the Sunday evening, there is a Mass when the candles are blessed, whereas it’s the Monday that’s the actual feast day, but again there is a procession only in the day. To be clear, this is a very religious affair (apart from the “civic” procession from the council on Monday), and not really a “show” as such. If you are looking for a spectacle, then it’s the fiestas patronales you want, in August … have a look HERE.

  9. Thanks for the guidance Janet.
