Adeje to keep up its telephone contact with the borough’s elders to retain ability to know and fulfil their needs

Updated 2 June: Adeje Ayuntmiento has confirmed how the system operates. There is a department which has a separate registration process to that of the padrón, and it is the one in which residents register to go on excursions, get news of events, and get a Seniors card which provides discounts for theatre shows locally, for example. At the start of the covid19 outbreak the council contacted the people registered in this system, and are now starting to work through the padrón itself, so people will be called to see if they are OK, if they need shopping done, and so on. The council stresses that they are NOT social services, rather a contact point. Those who wish to pre-empt the council calling and register now can do so by calling 922 756 229 – there are one or two there who speak some English.

Original post 1 June: I don’t know how many councils are doing this, but one certainly is … it may be the only one! Adeje is going to carry on with a programme started in the covid19 outbreak to maintain contact with the older generation – people aged 65-90 – in order to remain aware of and meet their needs. 

Adeje Ayuntamiento says that its community welfare and senior citizens departments, under Councillor José Antonio López Delgado, will continue with the telephone attention service for older residents that has been in operation. A section of the departmental staff have dedicated their time to keeping in touch with the borough’s elders, finding out if their situation has changed, their health, any changes in mobility, etc.

“Being aware of the situation of the over 65s living in Adeje is the goal, to know their needs, the conditions in which they are living, how we can help a section of our society most vulnerable to Covid-19”, commented the councillor, who added that “we also want to be give them what they need to cover the essentials, as well as keeping them up to date on the current situation, the phases the de-escalation is going through, and how all of this affects them personally”.

These contacts also allow our senior citizens know that they are not alone during this health crisis and that they can depend upon the services on offer from the relevant council departments.

The data collected by the department has shown that, while there are a few older individuals living alone, most of the borough’s senior citizens have spent the pandemic living with family members.

In a few exceptional cases there are a number of older persons, the majority foreign residents, who live alone, but have been assisted by neighbours, friends, or by those who have been offering professional assistance.

  1. Neither my husband nor our friends in Callao over 65 have had any phone call from Adeje although they are registered with Dr Blas in Armenime

    The question is whether you are registered with the council! Your registration with a state doctor means you’re registered in the Canarian Health Service, Sanidad, and Adeje Ayuntamiento are not in charge of that!

  3. How do we get included in this support system? We are residents in Adeje, on the Padron and over 65. We may not need assistance at the moment, but with the Covid 19 pandemic things can change at any time. Who should we be contacting?

    I have asked the council and it seems you might have to register within the support system – they are getting back to me and as soon as I have an answer I’ll post it here as an update and a comment under the post. Meanwhile, they say to call 600 144 855 which is the number for vulnerable elderly people.

  6. Hi Janet I have a dear elderly friend in Adeje and neither she nor I have ever heard of this support system. It is a great pity as she has had several problems, including health issues (not covid related) during the pandemic. She lives alone and didn’t leave her apartment for eight weeks due to fear of the virus.
    Myself and my partner have been helping her as much as possible but my partner was very ill in hospital with the virus and very weak when he came home, and obviously I was in quarantine. However, another elderly neighbour was checking on our friend, and we have been able to see her and help her recently, but she has been very distressed. The point I am making is how well was this support system publicised and would it appear to a British person to be only for Spanish people? Our friend is ok now but I do feel having someone to talk to would have been helpful to her when we couldn’t be there for her. Thank you

    I agree it wasn’t very widely known about it but it was known about. It certainly is not just for Spanish – nor Canarians – but for anyone on the padrón.

I am aware that any such support system would be for everyone, but have to say that many of the people I have asked either did not know about it or assumed it was for Canarian people or unusable due to potential language difficulties. Not that the latter is the fault of the council, of course. It is good to know it is continuing. Adeje seems to be on the ball when it comes to helping it’s community generally. much more than other areas. to be honest
