Adeje policeman wins Best Newcomer in Spanish national opera awards

Adeje policeman Jorge de León has been voted best newcomer in the Premios Líricos 2011, prizes awarded by the Fundación Premios Líricos Teatro Campoamor.

This is the sixth year of these prizes, which are national awards, and Jorge was chosen at the head of 300 candidates from the main theatres, festivals and seasons in Spain. The prize will be awarded in the Teatro Campoamor de Oviedo in February.

Jorge won the award on the basis of his performance in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in the Tenerife auditorium as part of the Tenerife Opera Festival 2010, and for his performances in Verdi’s Aida (a co-production by the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Den Norske Opera and the Oslo Ballet), and Puccin’s Tosca (a co-production of the Teatro Real de Madrid and the Bilbao Friends of Opera Association).
