Updated 14 April: Scores of people attended this morning’s commemoration of the collapse exactly a year of an apartment block in Los Cristianos. Flowers were laid in an emotional and simple ceremony to remember the seven who died followed by a minute’s silence in their honour. As expected, the council alo awarded medals to those who took part in the brutal rescue and recovery operations of the days following the disaster.
Original post 12 April: Arona Ayuntamiento has issued an open invitation to the public to attend a commemoration of the collapse of an apartment block in Los Cristianos on the first anniversary of the tragedy. The memorial will take place at 9.30am this Friday, the exact time of the dreadful incident, as a gesture of sympathy and support for those who lost their lives and everyone else who was affected by the catastrophe. It will be held next to the perimeter wall which now surrounds the area which became a scene of utter devastation exactly a year ago.Flowers will be laid and a minute’s silence will be observed for the seven dead. They were a 77-year-old Italian woman, a 41-year-old Italian man, a 72-year-old Finnish man, two Spanish woman from Asturias – one 71 years old and the other just 29, a 41-year-old Moroccan woman, and a 55-year-old man who was a native of the town. In addition, municipal medals will be awarded to the personnel who took part in the rescue, security and emergency operation in recognition of the terrible work demanded of them in the several days following the disaster.
