British man to appear in Court charged with causing forest fire in Gran Canaria on Wednesday

A forest fire in Gran Canaria on Wednesday was caused, it now appears, by a 55-year-old British man. The Guardia Civil says that the man is now in custody awaiting a Court appearance, where he will explain that the fire was caused accidently when he was cooking next to the tent in which he was camping in pine mountain between the Soria and Las Niñas reservoirs. The fire ended up burning some 3,000 square metres due in no small part to the windy conditions that have prevailed in the Canaries over recent days. The man faces up to a maximum of five years in prison plus monetary fines.
