British motorcyclist critically injured in road accident at El Portillo in Teide National Park

A British motorcyclist was critically injured and a Spanish one killed outright at 3.20pm yesterday afternoon on the TF21 La Orotava-El Portillo road in the Teide National Park. The accident happened near the Red Cross station when the motorcyclists came upon a blue Renault Clío that was turning into a parking area.

The British motorcyclist crashed headlong into the car, and the Spaniard hit a rock on the verge, dying virtually immediately. Despite desperate efforts to resuscitate him by a nurse on the spot and by emergency medics who arrived by helicopter shortly afterwards, nothing could be done for him. The Briton was transferred to HUC in critical condition.

The dead motorcyclist has been identified as 39 year old Domingo P.H., and the injured Briton as Jason Terry M.T., also 39. The woman driving the car and her female passenger were uninjured, though the 5 year old girl with them was treated for minor cuts and bruises at the Bellevue hospital in Puerto de la Cruz. An extremely shaken eye witness to the accident who was in a nearby restaurant gave a statement to Guardia Civil Tráfico officers. Their investigation continues.  PV
