On Monday, 21 June, the summer solstice will be celebrated at the Güímar Pyramids. Starting at 7pm, the doors of the ethnographic park will open to allow the public access to the pyramids themselves. There, weather conditions hopefully permitting, they will be able to observe the orientation of the pyramids with the sunset on the horizon.
This phenomenon was discovered by Belmonte, Aparicio and Esteban, researchers at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, who confirmed the alignment of the pyarmids with the summer and winter solstices. After studying the orientation of the complex, they determined that the two principal lines were aligned with great precision, one to sunrise on the winter solstice on 21 December, and the other to sunset on the summer solstice on 21 June. Moreover, they discovered that when the summer solstice sunset is viewed from the main axis, a weird optical illusion occurs of a double sunset, with the sun seeing to come back up over the horizon after it has set, to set again a few minutes later.
Entry is free, and special approved protective glasses will be provided by the organizers. C24H
