Councils face power cuts as Endesa loses patience at non payment of bills

Endesa will be cutting off the electric of 17 Canarian municipalities over the course of this and next month because the Ayuntamientos aren’t able to pay their electricity bills.

So far confirmed in Tenerife are Puerto de la Cruz, La Guancha, La Matanza, El Tanque and La Laguna. Other Ayuntamientos affected are in Gran Canaria, La Palma, and Lanzarote.

Elsewhere in Tenerife, Adeje, Arico, Buenavista del Norte, Candelaria, La Orotava, Los Silos, Garachico, Güímar, El Rosario and Vilaflor are said to have “renegotiated their tariffs”.

Puerto de la Cruz has already had a couple of short power cuts, the latest yesterday, almost as a shot across the bow, but Endesa has clearly lost patience with the late or total non-payment of its bills. How this will affect public areas, and in particular La Laguna’s forthcoming Noche en Blanco is anyone’s guess. El Dia
