As of 9am this morning, the Cunard Queen Elizabeth cruise liner is docked in Santa Cruz, en route from South Africa via Cape Verde. The ship will be in Santa Cruz for some hours, with passengers enjoying Tenerife’s capital on a day when it is celebrating the Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo (May Cross Fiesta), particularly honoured in Santa Cruz because it is the date on which, in 1494, the city was founded. The Queen Elizabeth will leave Tenerife around 5pm for Madeira, en route home to Southampton.

The Autoridad Portuaria, now headed by former Tenerife President Ricardo Melchior, said that throughout May there will be six other notable cruise liners docking in Santa Cruz, including the Britannia and Costa Magica on 13 May, the Costa Mediterranea on the 16th, and the Independence of the Seas on the 22nd.
