In a sign of quite how bad the economic crisis is in these islands, the latest business to close its doors is the family bakery Pan Domingo. After being a very respected brand name here for the past 45 years, and one that was closely identified with the Canaries, the company finished production on 31 January. Forty jobs will be lost as a result of the closure.
The company said that fall in demand and competition from supermarket own brands had caused a slow and inexorable decline over the past two years and it could no longer continue fighting insurmountable odds. When bakeries close, you know things are pretty bad.
