The Canarian Language Academy has just brought out the first Basic Dictionary of Canarian. Some 40 specialists have participated over 7 years in the production of the book, which details over around 5,000 entries the peculiarities of Spanish as it is spoken in the islands.
Humberto Hernández, Professor of the Spanish Philology Department in the University of La Laguna, and member of the commission which has compiled the dictionary, explained that it’s the first institutional book to come out of the Academia Canaria de la Lengua and that those involved in its composition have come from diverse fields of Canarian specialisms, including language, culture, and nature.
Prof Hernández stressed that the dictionary was intended for general use as much as specialist interest, and that it gives clear and precise definitions for use even in schools, with all definitions given additional examples of their use in real and day to day language as found in the islands. He said that although there are other Canarian dictionaries, only a few have actually been compliled by philologists, and that this is the first time that such a comprehensive and academically rigorous work has been produced, with even treatments of the distinctions in language between the islands within the Canaries, and illustrations of particularly Canarian items.
