FCO advises British expats of new £50 note

new 50 pound note

The Foreign Office has asked the Consulate in Tenerife to help alert British Nationals to the new Bank of England £50 banknote. Living abroad, the new note is something that many might otherwise be unaware of, and the Bank of England estimate that there is a significant number of £50 notes held abroad.

The new note features Matthew Boulton and James Watt, as above, and entered into circulation on 2 November. The old-style note remains in circulation and can be used normally until a withdrawal date is set by the Bank of England. Even after withdrawal, the old notes will retain their full value and will be able to be exchanged by the Bank even though not legal tender for commercial purposes.

The banknote has a number of new security features, and will eventually take over from the note carrying Sir John Houblon’s portrait. For further information, telephone (Uk) 020 7601 4878, or email enquiries@bankofengland.co.uk
