A 14-year-old swimmer had a lucky break this afternoon when she got into difficulties in the water at Playa Jardin, Puerto de La Cruz. Emergency services say that they were called out shortly after 4.30 pm with reports that the girl and two lifeguards who had swum out to save her were unable to return to shore because of the sea currents. A lifeboat and helicopter were despatched to recover all three, and the lifeguards were able to keep the girl afloat until they could be collected. They were flown by the helicopter to the town’s harbour which had been cleared for them to land, and where the girl was assessed as suffering little worse than anxiety and physical exhaustion. The lifeguards were fine.
