Head on collision between car and lorry on TF1 “chicken run” stretch near Bicho tunnel leaves one dead

Updated 3pm: As feared, the accident on the TF1 between the Chio junction and the BIcho tunnel was a dreadful one. Emergency services say that a full range of resources was deployed to the incident, which saw the car driver trapped in his vehicle, and the 27-year-old lorry driver suffer multiple injuries. He was transferred by helicopter to HUC where his condition is said not to be life-threatening, but sadly, the car driver died from the injuries he’d sustained in the collision.

edit: the victim has subsequently been identified as Juan Bernardo González Fleytas, the father of former CD Tenerife footballer Iriome González.

Original post 17 April: Emergency services have asked for drivers to take precautions while they are dealing with a head-on colision between a car and a lorry on the much-berated “chicken-run” stretch of the TF1. The control room says that resources were called out around 2pm with reports of the accident which happened near the Bicho tunnel shortly before the current end of the TF1 at Santiago del Teide town. 1. It is a bad stretch of the TF1. We travel along it most days and have seen some terrible sights such as people driving on the wrong side of the road to overtake. Hopefully there will be a center divide installed before many more accidents occur.
