The Canaries is doing more than just tightening its belt for next year’s budget for the islands. President Paulino Rivero says that he given his regional government “clear and emphatic” instructions to draw up their individual budgets on the basis of “maximum austerity”. Cuts are going to be felt, and the president’s only requirement is that essential services are not affected.
Essential services are considered to be education, health, and housing, together with employment creation. Even these will not escape the austerity measures, but President Rivero said that any “adjustments” will be made so as to ensure that frontline services are not affected.
