A large earthquake of magnitude 5.7 has been registered by the Instituto Geofráfico Nacional this lunchtime in the sea west of El Hierro. According to the Richter scale, this is “moderate” strength but not far off a “strong” 6. The quake is part of a cluster of smaller tremors also registered today, though it was the only one felt by the public who were aware of it just after 1pm. Nonetheless, it was felt widely despite being 56 km deep and 200 km out to sea. IGN says that since 6pm on Wednesday until this lunchtime some eight tremors have been recorded: the authorities stress that all this is “within normal parameters”.
