A police operation has broken up a cocaine smuggling ring using mules to bring the drug into the north Tenerife airport. The operation was run jointly by the Brigadas Locales de Policía Judicial de las Comisarías de La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz-Los Realejos and the Policía Nacional Border unit in TFN.

Three individuals have been arrested. One was stopped in the arrivals hall after flying in from Madrid, whereas the second, who had been on the same flight, was apprehended in a Puerto de la Cruz apartment. They had swallowed 23 and 30 capsules respectively, with the total amount of drugs seized being just over 1.5 kilos.

The third individual was arrested in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz a few hours later; he was intended to receive and distribute the drugs in Tenerife. All three have been remanded in custody.
