Santa Cruz has unveiled its Christmas cultural programme 2011-2012, with around 100 events planned to enliven the city’s streets and to bring a spirit of Christmas to the areas commercial centre. The vast majority of the events are free to attend, said mayor José Manuel Bermúdez as he unveiled the programme yesterday. The programme includes everything from the official turning on of the lights to the traditional parade of Los Reyes Magos, and brings sports events, gallery exhibitions, musical concerts, and of course the ice rink to make Santa Cruz a real public attraction this Christmas. The main events are as follows:
3 December – 8 January
Ice rink in the Plaza de Europa, open 10am to 11pm. On the eve of Los Reyes, 5th January, it will remain open until 5am.
Switching on of the Christmas lights – 7.30pm in the plaza de La Candelaria. Followed by music from Big Band Jazz Tamos. Illumination of almonds in flower in Zona Centro (plaza del Chicharro, Valentín Sanz, plaza del Patriotismo and Parque Bulevar).
11 & 18 December
Sacred music cycle in the Iglesia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción.
Military Band Christmas Concert at 7pm in the plaza del Príncipe.
Christmas concert at 7pm in the plaza del Príncipe.
17 – 22 December
Father Christmas handing out sweets in the streets of the Zona Centro.
19 December – 6 January
XLI competition of Belenes (Nativity scenes) throughout the city.
19 – 23 December
Carols in the streets of the Zona Centro.
21 December – 6 January
Christmas market in the plaza de la Iglesia and the plaza de La Concepción between 10am and 9pm.
23 & 24 December
Father Christmas handing out streets in the la Rambla commercial area, and in El Estadio-La Salle and the Mercado.
Christmas concert in Santa Cruz harbour 10pm.
New Year’s Eve party in the plaza de La Candelaria from 11pm, with performances by DJ Nato, Son Iya, Moisés González, Lion & Love and Los Científicos.
2 – 4 January
The pages of the Reyes Magos handing out sweets in the commercial areas between 5.30 and 8.30 pm.
Parade of Los Reyes Magos from 6pm to the plaza de La Candelaria at 8.30pm.
