Santa Cruz under State of Emergency due to economic crisis

The mayor of Santa Cruz, Miguel Zerolo, declared a State of Emergency in his municipality on 13 May 2009 due to the economic crisis. Sr Zerolo said that the law allows for a State of Emergency to be declared for “catastrophes” or “grave situations”, and that the economic situation in the Tenerife capital area was the worst in the last fifty years and clearly qualified as a social emergency. Under a State of Emergency, extra funds can be made available for emergency subsistence resources, and private schools and colleges can be co-opted as refuges for the homeless if needed.
