Electricity is gradually being restored to Tenerife after an island-wide outage from shortly before 10am this morning. It appears, as it has appeared before, that it was a fault in the Granadilla sub-station but Endesa has indicated that the cut was planned for “maintenance”. Many will find that claim dubious given that there was no announcement of any sort, and since “maintenance cuts” rarely affect the entire island. Possibly the company is trying to avoid another large fine after being sanctioned €40m for the last outage that affected the whole of Tenerife in September last year: Tenerife President Pedro Martín has already spoken to media to say that perhaps €40m wasn’t enough, and the Canarian Government has announced an enquiry …
