Small and very deep tremor recorded in La Laguna, the first one registered under the city

There are have been quite a few of the normal type of very low-level tremors in the Pico Viejo area lately, a situation quite typical of an active though quiescent volcano, and indeed there has been quite a cluster of low-level tremors from the “In Between volcano” on the faultline between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, but never before, apparently has there been one in La Laguna. Until now.

Vulcanologists say that a tremor of 1.6 on the Richter scale was recorded to the side of the Diocesan Seminary on the eastern outskirts of the city, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The tremor was registered shortly before 4am in the early hours of Saturday morning at a great depth of 43 km.
