Spain contributes to global environmental fight by banning free plastic bags and preparing to make them illegal altogether

In an attempt to help cut the global plastic problem, Spain has passed a law making it illegal for shops to provide free plastic bags to customers. The law, Real Decreto 293/2018, came into effect on Sunday, 1 July, and is intended to “reduce the adverse effect on the environment produced by residues generating damage particularly to marine ecosystems”. In addition to this measure, it will become illegal from 1 January 2021 for establishments to supply any plastic bags at all, nor any which are not biodegradable as defined by EU Directive 2015/720.
