Spanish Ornithological Society promotes Dia de las Aves – national Day of the Birds

The Tenerife Cabildo’s environment department has issued a reminder that today and tomorrow are Day of the Birds – DíadelasAves. The Sociedad Española de Ornitología (Spanish Ornithological Society) is behind the official national day of birds, trying to raise awareness and encourage behaviour that is environmentally friendly especially to these living descendants of the dinosaurs.

The Cabildo itself says that Tenerife alone has 70 breeding species, several of which are indigenous, and they can be seen at 21 specifically designed viewing points which are listed HERE: we are to be aware that some of these species are highly endangered while many are protected and so need to be viewed from these specific sites to avoid disturbing their nesting and breeding.

For those who are interested in birds and would like more information – whether about the wacka wacka Cory’s Shearwater (Pardela cenicienta), little birds like the Tenerife Goldcrest, Berthelot’s pipit, or African blue tit, or birds of prey from hawks to ospreys, buzzards to falcons, the Sociedad Española de Ornitología itself has a website HERE.
