The Tenerife Cabildo has expressed profound digust and utter condemnation of a homophobic attack in Puerto de la Cruz yesterday. Several people were assaulted after they appear to have been identified through one of the group, a technician from the Asociación LGBTI Diversas, wearing a T-shirt bearing the logo of the association. “We hope that these deplorable incidents in which people suffered physical and verbal assault will be punished legally”, said Nauzet Gugliotta, head of the Cabildo’s Citizen Participation and Diversity Department, as he also reiterated the island Government’s “utter rejection of this kind of violence, generating hate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity”. Gugliotta thanked the Policía Nacional for their rapid action which included the arrest of the assailant who will now be processed through the Court system. He called on other institutions and the public not to tolerate any kinds of physical or verbal aggressions motivated by hatred towards anyone else’s personal or social circumstances, and said that there is no place for hate in Tenerife. On behalf of the whole Cabildo, Gugliotta wished the victims of the attack a speedy recovery with full official support.
