Nearly a hundred volunteers joined the Tenerife Cabildo in Teno last weekend to take part in the third global environmental ‘Respect the mountains’ campaign organized by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation as part of a series of clean-ups throughout Europe. This latest event was dedicated to Spain, but in the end the only part of the country to participate was Tenerife.

The 95 Volunteers were given informative talks and some free time with a Canarian lunch and a tour of the Teno Lighthouse, opened especially for the occasion. Helpers worked to clean hiking trails, and collect rubbish from the beaches. The Cabildo says that it was surprising quite how many tyres were collected from shallow coastal water, as well as fishing equipment and a great quantity of plastic.

The event benefited from the collaboration of several businesses and institutions, like Buenavista del Norte Ayuntamiento, the Cabildo’s Environment Department, Voluntariado Ambiental, EcoOcéanos-Ecología y Cooperación Tenerife, Terramare Sendsub, Fuentealta, Ideco, the Asociación de Ayuda para Personas con Dependencia de Canarias, and the Fundación Tutelar Sonsoles Soriano.
