For the first time in ten years or so the Canary Islands will return to the international surfing circuit with Las Américas Pro, an event to be held between 29 January and 4 February next year. The announcement was made by Arona mayor José Julián Mena together with the regional and insular tourism ministers Isaac Castellano and Alberto Bernabé, and with the presidente of the Canarian Surf Federation, Ángel Lobo. Mayor Mena called on the Tenerife Cabildo to make the necessary investments into sewage treatment before the event to ensure the end of the undeniable problem of waste spills around the coast. Under optimum circumstances, he stressed, Las Américas was recognized by surfers themselves as an ideal coast, with all the qualities needed to be a European Hawaii. Some 150 surfers are expected to take part in the event.
