UK launches EHIC replacement, the Global Health Insurance card (GHIC)

The UK has now launched its alternative to the EHIC, the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). It ensures British nationals can continue to access emergency care when in the EU. EHIC and GHIC cards are intended to offer equivalent protections and since EHICs remain valid until they’re out of date, you only need to apply for a GHIC when your EHIC expires. There is more information from GovUK HERE but the most important thing to note is that as with the EHIC, the GHIC only covers UK residents for emergency and medically necessary care when travelling in the EU: in other words it is not an option for anyone resident in Tenerife.
