Underwater fisherman rescued by helicopter off Arona coast

A lifeguard helicopter was in action just before noon today to rescue a man, said to be 39 years old, who had gone fishing underwater off the Arona coast. Emergency services say that they were called out by the man’s family, who reported that he had left home at first light but hadn’t returned.

A search team was dispatched, with Salvamento Marítimo and Guardia Civil search and rescue helicopters, as well as land units, and they were informed by the crew of a sailing vessel that the diver had been found injured and was in their boat. The lifeguard helicopter hoisted him on board and flew him to TFN where paramedics were waiting to stabilize him. He was transferred to Candelaria Hospital where he is reported to have serious head injuries.
