Updated 25 September: There has been an unprecedented wave of church burglaries in Tenerife this year, and police say they have now arrested three for breaking and entering six churches in Santa Cruz and La Laguna. Whether these are the the same thieves responsible for thefts in churches in other parts of Tenerife as well is not yet clear but police say they are all Spanish, two in their twenties and one in his forties. A range of stolen items has been recovered, many precious, and a vehicle used by the burglars who are said to have passed themselves off as tourists to “mark” their targets.

Original post 25 May: Residents of the Las Higueritas area of Guía de Isora are the latest victims of a wave of thefts from churches in Tenerife. The latest robbery was of a small but revered statue of the Virgen del Carmen from the little chapel of Los Llanitos at the top of the road leading down from the town to Playa de San Juan. The theft is being investigated by the Guardia Civil who are adding it to the four other current investigations of similar robberies of jewelled icons, statues and monetary collections in the last couple of weeks in Arico, Barranco Hondo, Igueste de Candelaria and El Sauzal.
