Update 2 February: Today is the last day of Alcalá’s fiesta with a solemn mass this morning at 11.30, and this evening from 6pm a the presentation of the children born through 2013. This will be followed by the traditional procession, and the fiesta will end with music, dancing and food in the town’s Plaza del Llano. Those attending are invited to bring offerings to the Virgen in the form of non-perishable foodstuffs which will then be distributed to the needy of the parish. At 10pm, things start to heat up with music from the parranderos de Tágara, followed by the main event with the orquesta Arguayo Band.
Original post 31 January: The Virgen de Candelaria is not just the patron saint of Tenerife, she is also the patron saint of Alcalá, on the west coast, and although the town’s own fiesta is in August, it also has a particular celebration for the Virgen’s own day in February. So today, tomorrow and Sunday, Alcalá is holding its Fiesta De Febrero de Alcalá, en honor a la Virgen de Candelaria. The programme of events supplied by Guía de Isora is above, it’s a photo of a typed sheet so not too clear but it should be expandable. What is clear, however, is that if you fancy some local culture or a dance or two, Alcalá over the next three evenings is the place to be!
