A 19-year-old British man has fallen to his death from the fourth floor of his holiday accommodation in the Caribe aparthotel in Playa de las Américas. The tragedy occurred at 5.45 this morning, on the very day he was due to return home to the UK. Emergency services were called out, but were sadly unable to do more than confirm his death at the scene.  He has been identified only by his initials ADM (as is usual with the Spanish press), and he was apparently on holiday with a group of friends.  Diario de AvisosREAD MORE

A cayuco carrying 41 adult males was spotted four miles to the south of Tenerife off Montaña Roja in Granadilla municipality at 7.30 this morning. It was intercepted by Lifeboats and Guardia Civil and towed to Los Cristianos. Two of the occupants have been taken to El Mojón hospital, the new public hospital in the south just up the hill from Los Cristianos. Numbers of these craft arriving in 2009 are halved from last year, and none came to any of the Canaries in all of April and May. The Government argues that this is because of the new advance alert system, Sistema de VigilanciaREAD MORE

Tenerife has its first cases of the A/H1N1 virus (swine flu as it was incorrectly known at first). Sanidad has confirmed the results of two sets of tests carried out at the Microbiology Unit at HUC (Hospital Universitario de Canarias) on a couple who recently returned from the USA. Neither appears to have a severe case of the flu, and the couple has not been admitted to hospital. The tests have been sent for reconfirmation to the National Microbiology Centre. There is frustratingly little detail on this story, but if you have been the victim of a timeshare scam, you could do worse than get your lawyer to check if this is related to your case. South Tenerife National Police have arrested seven individuals from a group dedicated to timeshare fraud. The operation began in February when investigations started into how 50 or so victims were defrauded of around €30,000 each after being contacted by a company claiming to have buyers interested in taking over their timeshare rights. Once the “administration, fiscal, and legal costs” for the so-called purchases were handed over, however, both supposedREAD MORE
